Introducing Our Horror Film main Characters...

In our short horror film, we have decided to have two main characters. One of the characters in an innocent teenage boy who is walking through the forest minding his own business. This charter lives a normal life, he goes to school like any other boy and enjoys going out and socialising with his friends. The reason that we have decided to make our main character as 'normal' as possible is because it gives the audience a better chance of making a connection  with the charter, because he can be related to.


The second main character is the killer. The killer is the character who will be hunting down the teenage boy and chasing him through the forest. The main characteristic of the killer is that it wears a mask, the reason behind this is because it makes the character look more intimidating and it also creates a sense of mystery about who the killer is. In terms of personality, there really isn't a lot to say about the killer apart from the fact that it is a deranged psychopath.

Clothing/Props- The dog walker will be wearing casual clothes, wellies, jeans and a shirt, also, the walker will have a leash for his dog. These are used in order to create a sense of normality, which will cause a greater sense of shock for the viewer when the clown comes out. Also, these bright clothes create a contrast with the dark future ahead. My target audience would agree that this type of clothing is suitable because is makes the audience unsuspecting that something is going to happen, therefore increasing the amount of shock that they have when the innocent man is attacked.








The clown will have an intimidating mask on, while wearing very dark clothing. the reason that we are using such dark clothing is to show that the clown is dark throughout, whether it be his dark personality or his dark clothing choice. His clothing reflects his personality. Secondly, we will use a mask because we want the viewer to think that the clown is hiding a much more scary and evil person behind the mask. I believe that the clown should wear a dark all in one outfit, as it looks very rough and rugged. I think that my target audience would like the idea of the killer with a clown mask and a dark overall suit. This is because the brightness of the clown mask will contrast with the dark outfit, the clown's face will stand out more especially in the moonlight.

Storyboard 1

1) Main character becomes the clown, long-shot is firstly used two show what the clown looks like from a distance, this almost creates the same view that any victims would have of the clown.






2) Camera goes to tracking shot, as the clown sees someone enter dark forest.








3) Camera is goes behind someone who is entering the forest, to replicate what the person is seeing in front of them.







4) The clown begins to sprint towards the woman with his knife, only to find out that the woman has a gun inside her pocket, the clown stops dead in it's tracks. The camera goes to a first person shot on the woman, pointing the gun towards the clown.





5) Noin diegetic sound of gunshot goes off , the scene ends with a black screen.

Locations For Filming

The short film that we are making will be in the genre of horror, the horror film will be located in the forest/woods, so we have been looking for local areas which fit the criteria.

The first place that I thought of was Eastham woods, this area suits the criteria because there are many dirt trails inside and also there are many trees surrounding the area. I particularly like this location because it is very close to my house (5 minutes walk) so I wouldn't have to be arranging transport. There is also a bear pit in Eastham woods, which would be very useful in our filming, such as people getting trapped in there with no escape etc.    

I believe that my target audience would agree that Eastham Woods is an ideal place to film due to the potential of many areas in the woods . Eastham Woods provides a bear pit, which when filmed in the dark would create a very eerie atmosphere. The large overgrown trees near the entrance of the woods also provide a great natural darkness as they block out the sunlight.
The only issue that we could come across when filming is the distraction of people walking past the camera, these woods are visited frequently by the public, so we may have to film late at night when it is less busy.
                                                                                                                      

The second location that I thought of that met the criteria was dibbinsdale woods, this is once again a very local area which is easy to access and free to the public. Not only does the dibbinsdale woods have an area with lots of greenery such as tall trees and bushes, but it has a tunnel which could be used for suspense, especially when filmed late at night.

 I believe that my target audience would agree that this is a great place for filming. the interesting imagery (woodwork dragon) and the luscious green trees really give us something exotic to film. Dibbinsdale woods are also relatively local, so they are accessible. An issue that we may come across is that groups frequently go out for excursions in the woods, such as scouts/beavers. This could distract us from our filming.

What are the dangers of creating independent films?

The film business is very dangerous. The film Papadopoulos and sons was made with an £800,000 budget, and they have only made £400,000 back, this emphasises the fact that the film industry isn't always going to make you rich and famous. Often, you will find that independent films will go to SVOD services, the independent companies will do this because they do not want to take the risk of letting it go to box office, as it may flop. The SVOD services guarantee the independent film companies money, which takes the risk out of the equation.
